Tennis - US Open Update

The first round action of the 2018 US Open is still ongoing but, barring any delays, the remainder of the first round matches should be completed today. There hasn’t been a huge amount of upsets so far but British number one and sixteenth seed crashed out against veteran Lorenzi in four sets yesterday. Edmunds struggled in the oppressive heat and after winning the first set he wilted away and will now have to get ready for the Asian swing in China and Japan but he will at least get a few weeks to practice and work on things, which will hopefully bring about an improvement.

There was better news for British tennis fans as Andy Murray won a tough opener from a set down and while he continues to improve he’s not 100% their mentally still and life won’t get easier today as he faces veteran Verdasco who has been in solid form this year but Murray can take heart from the fact he’s won thirteen of their fifteen matches on the ATP Tour.

British number three Cameron Norrie came through a challenging first round four set encounter against Aussie Thompson and Norrie has the advantage of playing most of his career in the USA college and then ITF and Challenger systems and Tours during his time at University in the USA, which should mean he’s well suited mentally and physically to playing in hot conditions like they’ve experienced in New York so far this week.

Norrie faces an even tougher test in his second round match against Serbian Lajovic who has been in solid form so far this year and he impressed knocking out the seeded Dzhumur in the first round in four sets. The biggest shock of the first round was Nineteenth Bautista Agut who crashed out in straight sets against American Wild Card Jason Murray Kubler. Young Italian Lucky Loser and NextGen star Sonego upset the more experienced Muller in a gruelling five set encounter.

The second round action continues and some of the main matches are reigning champion and top-seed Nadal against the unseeded Canadian and Nadal won their only match on the ATP Tour and should have little difficulty facing the third round. Fifteenth seed Tsitsipas and Winston Salem winner Medvedev have both been in great form this year, especially on hard courts this summer, and Medvedev won their only previous encounter which was this year at the Miami Masters 1000 Series in three sets.

Eleventh seed Isner faces a tough test against the talented big serving NextGen star Jarry from Chile but Isners serves is considerably better and if he serves well it’s enough to win him a lot of matches due to the pressure it puts on the opponents serve. Finally, Wild Card Stan Wawrinka has really stepped his level and game up this summer and he was impressive thrashing Dimitrov in three sets. If Stan gets in to a grove on his serve and ground strokes, starts hitting the ball bigger and going for more winners he is going to be a dangerous floater this fortnight and should have little trouble dispatching qualifier Humbert today.
