Tennis - Australian Open Update
Kyle Edmund’s awe-inspiring run at this year’s Australian Open continued on Monday when he knocked out third seed and 2017 semi-finalist Dimitrov in their quarter-final encounter in four sets to reach his first Grand Slam semi-final. Edmunds will face sixth seed Cilic in Thursday’s semi-final after the Croatian benefited from a fifth set injury retirement by Nadal. The second group of quarter-finals were due to be played in the early hours of this morning and by the time you read this article we should be close to knowing if Federer or Berdych and Chung or Sandgren are through to the semi-finals.
The Australian Open has a history of throwing up shocks and surprises and this year’s renewal has been no different. Three unseeded players have reached the quarter-finals and we are guaranteed to have two unseeded players in the semi-finals with Edmund already through and the winner of the Chung and Sandgren match producing the other unseeded player. It’s also great to see some more Next Generation players starting to challenge for the Grand Slams. This trend is likely to continue now and it’s just a matter of time before one of these talented young players makes a Slam final and wins their first Slam, let’s hope its Kyle Edmund on this occasion.
