This week’s ATP and WTA tennis action is now down to the quarter-final stage and it’s good to see my outright selections this week, Medvedev (33/1) at Queens and Khachanov (66/1) and Zverev (13/2) at Halle, still in with a chance of reaching Sunday’s finals. At Queen’s today, second favourite Cilic (seeded 4) faces American Young who is unseeded and Cilic leads the head-to-head 2-0 and sixth seed Dimitrov faces Medvedev for the first time.
Seventh seed Berdych faces veteran Lopez for the fourteenth time, Lopez leads the head-to-head 7-6, including winning both encounters on grass, and he has a strong chance of winning again today based on his recent form on grass. 2010 winner Querrey faces ‘s-Hertogenbosch winner Muller today, Querrey leads the head-to-head 2-0 and he also has a decent chance of extending his winning record today.
At Halle today top-seed Federer faces 2015 winner Mayer and Federer leads the head-to-head 7-0. Fourth seed Zverev faces seventh seed Bautista-Agut and the Spaniard leads the head-to-head 2-1 but the wins came on clay and hard courts. Khachanov faces compatriot and Wild Card Rublev and Rublev leads the head-to-head 1-0 and two unseeded players Gasquet and Haase round up the quarter finals and Gasquet leads the head-to-head 4-1, but on grass it’s 1-1 and Haase won his match at Halle in 2014.
On the WTA at Birmingham the top-five seeds continued to struggle and second seed Svitolina (1.40) lost yesterday against qualifier Giorgi. Fourth seed Konta (1.42) also lost against the unseeded Vandewhege yesterday, but fifth seed Mladenovic made it through to the quarter finals. At Mallorca third seed Garcia will complete her third round match against qualifier Cepolova today and the result stands at 1 set and 2 games all. The winner will face sixth seed Vinci, second seed Sevastova faces seventh seed Konjuh for the first time and the other two quarter finals are between unseeded players, compatriots Goerges against Lisicki and Bellis against Pliskova.
