Tennis - French Open Update

The French Open is now well underway at Roland Garros and there has already been plenty of top-class matches and entertainment in both the men’s and women’s tournaments. Ninth seed Alexander Zverev was well supported for the French Open after his Rome Masters success but crashed out in the first round after finding a later than expected start time and the vastly experienced top class opponent, veteran Fernando Verdasco, too much to handle. Jack Sock seeded 14 was also a surprise first round casualty losing to Vesely in straight sets after he had recently beat him at the Rome Masters.

Tournament favourite Nadal got his campaign off to a winning start when brushing aside Paire in straight sets, as did the other top-seeds such as Murray, Djokovic, Wawrinka, Raonic, Thiem, Cilic and Nishikori, who all made it through to the second round without too much drama. The majority of the remaining top-20 seeds Goffin, Dimitrov, Berdych, Monfils, Pouille, Bautista-Agut, Kyrgios, Ramos-Vinolas and Carreno-Busta have progressed to the second round as well.

There were a couple of high profile upsets in the women’s draw, most notably top-seed Kerber and seventh seed Konta, who lost their first round matches against Makarova and Hsieh respectively. Other seeds who lost in the first round were Americans Vandewhege and Davis, veteran Lucic-Baroni and the talented young Australian, Gavrilova.

From a match betting and/or trading perspective there are a few men’s and women’s second round matches that have caught my eye and will hopefully return a profit. From the men's draw top-seed Andy Murray (1.1) is worth opposing against the dangerous Klizan and so is third seed Wawrinka (1.18) against the talented Dolgopolov who leads the head-to-head 2-1. Fognini (1.4) is worth opposing against compatriot Seppi who leads the head-to-head 5-4.

From the women’s draw ninth seed Radwanska (1.3) is worth opposing against qualifier Van Uytvanck and 21st seed Suarez-Navarro (1.46) is worth opposing against Cirstea as the Romanian leads the head-to-head 4-1.
