US Racing - Review of Saturday's Graded Racing

Before we start this weekend’s preview, a quick look back to last weekend and it was good to identify a good priced winner in Bigger Picture, who ran on well to take Aqueduct’s Red Smith Handicap.

This week we make a rare visit to Delta Downs, who have put on a valuable card worth around $2.3m. The two feature races are both grade threes for two year olds and could provide some valuable early clues for next year’s triple crown races.

We start with the Princess Stakes for fillies over a mile and worth $400,000 and, to sweeten the pot further, there are 10 2017 Kentucky Oaks points up for grabs to the winner.

This looks an open contest with the Morning Line going 7/2 the field. It looks too difficult to call but Dude Fantasy could represent a bit of value at the ML price of 9/2. She is unbeaten in her two starts and looks to be capable of much more. There looks to be an excellent chance of a strong pace, which should suit her run style.

The feature race of the card is the $1m Jackpot Stakes over a mile and a sixteenth. The winner will also earn 10 Kentucky Derby points. This is now a recognized pathway to the Triple Crown with last year’s winner, Exaggerator, going on to win the Preakness.

The Morning Line favourite, at 5/2, is Gunnevera, who has a lot of pace but has to prove he can handle two turns having been only fifth in the Breeders’ Futurity. The cleverly-named Dangerfield has plenty of stamina and looks a big price at 12/1. He is well drawn in gate 5 and, if he can break well and can handle this tight track, he could well represent a bit of value.

For our final race we head to Woodbine and the Bessarabian Stakes, a seven furlong grade 2 event for fillies and mares worth $200,000. Midnight Miley looks a worthy 2/1 favorite. She went off too fast when well beaten in the Canadian over a mile and an eighth but has been rested since then and aimed at this event. The drop back to 7 furlongs should be perfect, having recorded a Beyer of 97 when last seen over this distance.
