Tennis Report

It’s quarter-finals day at the Paris Masters today and world numbers one and two (Djokovic and Murray) are still in action and on course to meet in Sunday’s final. If they do, Murray will not be able to overtake Djokovic in the ATP singles ranking race and end the year as number one. However, if Djokovic falls before the final and Murray wins Paris, he will overtake Djokovic and top the rankings for the first time in his career.

Ninth seed Cilic ended eighth seed Goffin’s hopes of qualifying for the World Tour Finals later this month yesterday and, in doing so, secured his place at the prestigious end of season finale for the second time. This was at the expense of world number eight Dominic Thiem, whom he overtakes in the ATP singles rankings race. Cilic will face top-seed Djokovic today for a place in the semi-finals and history is not on his side as he’s never beaten the world number one, trailing the head-to-head 14-0.

Whoever wins will face either Isner or Sock, who are both unseeded this week, and Sock is the most likely to progress having won their last two encounters in 2015 and 2016 in straight sets. Murray will face seventh seed Berdych for a place in the semi-finals today and the winner of this encounter will face either fourth seed Raonic or 11th seed Tsonga. Murray leads the head-to-head with Berdych 9-6, has won the last five in a row and, on current form, should win today’s encounter without too much drama.
