Plenty of big shocks at Basel and Vienna already this week and I was right to avoid backing second seed Raonic at Basel as he lost his first round match against qualifier Berankis 3-6 6-3 6-3. Sixth seed Dimitrov also lost at the first round stage and Andrey Kuznetsov (1.36) lost his first round match as predicted.
Top seed Stan Wawrinka had to work hard to progress to the second round just beating veteran compatriot Chuidinelli 6-7 6-1 6-4 while third seed Nishikori and fourth seed Cilic had no such trouble reaching round 2 with both winning their respective matches easily in straight sets.
Fifth seed David Goffin was a comfortable straight sets winner against Baghdatis while seventh seed Gasquet (1.14), who I advised to oppose, eighth seed Sock (advised 16/1) and Wild Card Del Potro (advised 6/1) will get their tournaments underway today.
At Vienna I was right to avoid backing second seed Berdych, who lost his first round match against qualifier Basilashvili but I got backing Bautista-Agut outright wrong as he lost his first round match against veteran Wild Card Jurgen Melzer. Pouille (seeded 7) lost his first round match against veteran Lopez, while there were comfortable wins for Thiem (3), Ferrer (5), Tsonga (6) and Karlovic (8), who all won in straight sets, except Ferrer, who benefited from Britain’s Kyle Edmund retiring injured at 3-2 during the first set.
Top seed Andy Murray gets his campaign underway today against Klizan. Fifth seed Ferrer (1.33) faces Sousa today or tomorrow and is worth opposing as he trails the head-to-head 1-0 and his form has been way below his best so far this season.
