Tennis Update

This week’s ATP tennis action at Shenzen and Chengdu is now down to the quarter-final stage and at Shenzen both my outright selections, Gasquet (6/1) and Tomic (10/1), are still in action. Gasquet plays German Zverev for the first time and his match should be well underway or complete by the time you read this article. Gasquet has won the first set and if plays anywhere near his best he should progress to tomorrow’s semi-finals as Zverev is ranked outside the top-100 and at the age of 29 has yet to win an ATP tournament.

Tomic plays the experienced Bellucci this morning after 10am GMT and they’ve met twice on the ATP Tour, Bellucci won their first encounter on clay back in 2012 and Tomic the last on hard courts in 2013. The young Australian should progress to the semi-finals if he produces his best tennis where he will face the winner of top-seed Berdych and eighth seed Vesely.

Over at Chengdu my one outright selection Dimitrov (5/1) faces the unseeded Schwartzman after 11am GMT and the Bulgarian should gain revenge for his painful Istanbul final defeat to Schwartzman earlier this year as he’s a far better player on hard courts than clay.

Top-seed Thiem is still in action and should progress against clay court specialist Ramos-Vinolas with any real drama. Elsewhere, you may remember I selected outsider Karen Kachanov last week at St Petersburg and he fell at the first hurdle, but he’s made it to the quarter-finals this week and faces veteran Lopez, whom he’s never played before. Kachanov is potentially a future star of the game and I believe he’s more than capable of pushing Lopez close today and causing the upset.

The one other match today is between sixth seed Troicki and the unseeded Anderson who leads the head-to-head 2-1. This includes a straight sets win on hardcourts at the Canadian Masters this year.
