World number one Novak Djokovic won’t get a better chance to make it 13 Grand Slam wins at this year’s US Open after Andy Murray’s capitulation on Wednesday. However, he’s got to overcome a rejuvenated Gael Monfils first and then either Nishikori or Wawrinka in the final. Wawrinka is the player Djokovic will want to avoid the most as he’s posed him significant problems in all of their Grand Slam encounters bar one and the way he has come in under the radar again with no pressure on him suggests he’s primed to make a serious challenge for the title.
There was a big shock in the first women’s semi-final when Serena Williams was beaten comfortably by Pliskova in straight sets. She blamed a knee injury for her surprise defeat. Serena will now have to wait until 2017 to register her 23rd Grand Slam win. The other semi-final between Wozniaki and second seed Kerber had all the hallmarks of a real battle of attrition but in the end Kerber breezed through in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
