New US Open favourite Andy Murray breezed through to the third round under the new Arthur Ashe stadium roof last night seeing off Marcel Granollers in straight sets. Murray had to contend with a deafening downpour and surprise aggressive attacking tactics from Granollers but he is well renowned for adapting to the circumstances that face him on the court and dealt with both admirably. He now has a well-earned day’s rest before facing either 30th seed Gilles Simon or Paulo Lorenzi, neither of who should pose him any major problems on current form.
Kyle Edmunds also made it through to the third round on Wednesday after knocking out American teenager Escobedo in straight sets, but will face his sternest so far when he lines up against 20th seed John Isner tonight. Qualifier Dan Evans then went on to defeat German teen sensation Alexander Zverev to take his place in the third round and we now have three British male players in with a chance of making the fourth round.
Johanna Konta (66/1) has made it through to the third round, but not without a scare after collapsing at the end of the second set due to heat exhaustion, but for my outright advice she thankfully recovered to win in three sets against Tsvetana Pironkova and will now face another very tough test against 24th seed Belinda Bencic who leads the head-to-head 2-1.
My other tournament outright selections Monfils (200/1), Del Potro (22/1), Kvitova (22/1) and my Quarter Winner selections Cilic (5/1) and Kyrgios (10/1) were all still in action. Monfils, Cilic and Kvitova had already made it through to the third round and will play Almagro, Sock and Svitolina respectively tonight while Del Potro and Kyrgios won their second round matches against Johnson and Zeballos respectively.
