The men’s Olympic tennis tournament is now down to the quarter-final stage and Team GB’s Andy Murray is still on course to defend his Olympic title. However, he still has a lot of hard work to do with the in form Steve Johnson from the USA (seeded 12) up next followed by either fourth seed Nishikori (Japan) or sixth seed Gael Monfils (France) in the semi-finals.

Third seed Rafael Nadal is still on course to reach the Olympic final from the top-half of the draw. Next up he has a tricky encounter against home hope and unseeded Tomaz Bellucci, who will be roared on by a patriotic home crowd. The other quarter-final in the top-half of the draw is between the unseeded Juan Martin Del Potro and tenth seed Roberto Bautista-Agut.

The womens Olympic tennis event has thrown up plenty of shocks so far but yesterday’s quarter-final matches all went to the higher ranked players and favourites. Today’s semi-finals are between:

- 11th seed Kvitova from the Czech Republic and the surprise package of the event Monica Puig of Paraguay. The pair have never met before.

- 7th seed Keys from the USA and gold medal favourite and second seed Angelique Kerber from Germany, who knocked out Britain’s Jo Konta yesterday.

On the ATP Tour at Los Cabos in Mexico the action is now down the quarter-final stage and my one outright selection Karlovic (7/1) is still in action and at the time of writing was due to face eighth seed Marcel Granollers in the early hours of this morning.
