Tennis Update report

Big shocks at Kitzbuhel on Wednesday when the top two seeds and tournament favourites Dominic Thiem and Philip Kohlschreiber both crashed out against big outsiders Jurgen Melzer (8.00) and Karen Kachanov (6.60) respectively. The fact that both players were beaten backed up my historical 10 year tournament analysis for seeded players at Kitzbuhel ie the top-two seeds have a very poor record over the last decade. They’ve won no titles between them and they have been a losing finalist only three times during this period (last in 2013).

In addition to this third seed Granollers and fifth seed Rosol also lost against lower ranked outsiders and at the semi-final stage fourth seed Lorenzi and sixth seed Lajovic are the only seeded players left standing and they face Gerald Melzer and Nikoloz Basilashvili respectively today, who are both ranked outside the top-100.

At Gstaad both of my outright selections Pella and Monaco crashed out in the first round. The only upset yesterday was Bellucci losing from a set up against Brown and today’s quarter-finals are between top-seed and veteran Lopez and young Swedish star Elias Ymer, who meet for the first time, as do Brown and veteran Youzhny, which should be a highly entertaining encounter. The match of the day could be between to in-form players Mathieu seeded 8 and Bastad winner and fourth seed Ramos-Vinolas; Mathieu leads the head-to-head 3-0 and at the prices I think Ramos-Vinolas is worth laying (1.40) if you use the betting exchanges.

There have been plenty of upsets at Umag so far this week; top seed Cuevas (1.17) crashed out yesterday against Elias, as did seventh seed Klizan (1.22) and one of my outright tournament selections and eighth seed Vesely (1.67) and fifth seed Almagro lost earlier in the week.

Today’s quarter-finals are between Elias, and my one remaining outright tournament selection and sixth seed Carreno-Busta (14/1), fourth seed Fognini and Dzuhmur, which should be an entertaining match and there could be another upset here, Berlocq and third seed Chardy and second seed Sousa and Martin.

At Washington third seed Tomic, one of my outright tournament selections, lost against Newport winner and 13th seed Karlovic last night, and at the time of writing top-seed Isner and fifth seed Johnson were both through to the quarter-finals. My one remaining outright tournament selection Querrey beat 11th seed Dolgopolov in straight sets.

Also, second seed Monfils beat 16th seed Coric in straight sets, fourth seed Paire beat 14th seed Muller in 3 sets, Zverev (7) beat Jaziri and Sock (6) beat Britain’s Dan Evans.
