The Wednesday Golf Report
Two thrilling finishes to the golf with a close run for our selection Joost Luiten who came second. At Valderrama Sergio Garcia produced a surging late run but a bogey at the 18th cost him a win in the tournament that his foundation hosted. It was left to the man with the big beard, Andrew Johnston to land his maiden title on tour and perhaps we shouldn’t have been too surprised as his play this year has been good with a fourth placing in Qatar the highlight. This could kick-start “Beef’s” career so keep an eye on him over the next few weeks. Others to play well were Martin Kaymer who is getting back to form and the Dane Soren Kjeldsen and they look sure to be challenging over the next few tournaments.
In the States, Branden Grace the South African, won his first PGA tour title when he shot 66 to win by two from Russell Knox and Luke Donald. Our main selection Matt Kuchar played well and finished ninth. If Grace can improve his driving he can go on to better things as his approach play is as good as anyone’s.
On to this week and it is the Valero Texas Open with Jimmy Walker the defending champion after he beat Jordan Spieth last year by four shots. I’m going to put up three players, Billy Horschel, Matt Kuchar and Brandt Snedeker who should all go well here.
In “Europe” the event is the Shenzen International in China! This is a new venue so course form is non-existent so selecting anyone is difficult. Perhaps we should stay with Luiten and add Tommy Fleetwood and Thorbjorn Olesen who are both showing signs of returning to form. Keep stakes low and enjoy!
