BACKGROUND TO INDY CAR RACING

 

Indy Car racing is a genre of championship car racing based in the United States & North America. The flagship event is the Indianapolis 500 which first ran in 1911. Races take place on smaller circuits than their European counterparts with many more lap repetitions. There have been some spectacular collisions over the years and cars often collide with the perimeter barrier right in front of spectators. There have been four driver fatalities since 1996 including English driver Dan Wheldon, who died in October 2011.
