BACKGROUND TO BASKETBALL

Basketball was established in Massachussets (USA) in 1891 and has developed rapidly since then, particularly in college and school environments. At its simplest, two teams of five players try to throw or 'shoot' a round ball through an 18 inch diameter iron ring, 10ft off the ground. Today, basketball is played both indoors and outdoors by millions all over the world although major competitions are all played indoors. Basketball attracts large television audiences, particularly in the USA.

THE GAME TODAY

Basketball is now a well established Olympic sport today and there are also world championships held biannually between basketball-playing nations. Beneath the international level most countries have thriving domestic leagues. Undoubtedly the top league in the world is the NBA where eight regional divisions compete annually with the winners taking part in the NBA finals. The NBA finals achieve extensive television coverage throughout the Americas and Europe. Historically, the USA has dominated international and Olympic basketball.

TOP TIPS FOR BETTING ON BASKETBALL

BETTING GUIDE

There are two main geographic markets – the USA and Europe. NBA is fast becoming a popular betting sport in the UK

USA

Gambling in the USA is unlawful except in Nevada and some Indian reservations. Lawful gambling on the NBA final grosses £100 million, increasing to over £2 billion for the whole season. Unlawful betting in other states is very significant with annual turnover estimated at over £15 billion.

Europe

Betting in Europe is much more limited but the major bookmakers and exchanges offer markets on most domestic leagues and international matches.

The main basketball betting markets are:

  • Ante Post Betting

  • Fixed odds betting

  • In-play Betting

  • Spread Betting

ANTE POST BETTING

Ante-post markets exist for each of the eight divisions of the NBA and for the NBA finals.
Similar markets are available for the World Championships, the Olympics and for national leagues throughout Europe. Markets will be outright win and each-way to reach the final or quarter finals.

Betting Example

Whilst there are ante-post markets for each of the NBA divisions, for example the North West Conference and the Atlantic Conference, the most popular ante-post market is for the NBA Championships which are contested annually between the winners of each regional championship. Prices in this market for the February 2012 NBA Championship were:

  • 2.8 Miami Heat

  • 6 Oklahoma

  • 6.5 Chicago Bulls

  • 15 LA Lakers

  • 17 LA Clippers

TOP TIPS FOR ANTE-POST BETTING

  • Compare ante-post prices with bookmakers and exchanges and take the best odds

  • Look to hedge if your bet is doing well

  • Keep track of any injuries likely to affect key players

Hedge Betting Example

  • In the above championship, Joe had $20 on his team Lakers at 15.0 before the season started.
Lakers went on to win their league and the first two rounds of the knock-out stage

  • They were then 5.0 in the ante post market and 1.2 NOT to win on the betting exchange. He bet $100 dollars on them NOT to win the Championship

  • This covered his original $20 bet and if Lakers went on to win His return would be $300 less $100 ie $200

FIXED ODDS BETTING

The most popular type of bet on basketball is “The Spread". This is not to be confused with spread betting but is where the bookmakers handicap a match by giving one of the teams a number of points start. They will then typically bet odds of 10/11 each team. If two bettors stake $10 on each team the bookmaker will pay out $19 for every $20 he takes, in other words a 5% profit margin.

This means that every game played can generate betting interest and turnover while in a win only market if Miami Heat played against a poor regional team they might be 1.01 or 1.02. Win only betting is available on each match and the markets are strong in televised games. Predicting over or under points totals scored by both teams is also a popular market.

Betting Example on Basketball

For LA Lakers against Chicago bulls, the points market might be two way ie

  • 1.8 over 175 points

  • 2.0 for 175 points and below

Or three way ie

  • 2.5 for 0-171 points,

  • 2.5 for 171-180 points

  • 3.0 for 181 points and above

IN-PLAY BETTING ON BASKLETBALL

Basketball is exciting to watch with regular team changes and fouls. In-play markets offer prices to win as well as prices on the next team or player to score.

TOP TIPS FOR FIXED ODDS BETTING AND IN-PLAY MARKETS

  • Compare prices on individual match spreads and win points between bookmakers and exchanges, taking the price that best fits your strategy

  • Hedge to develop win/win situations (see the hedging example above)

SPREAD BETTING ON BASKETBALL

Popular spread betting markets are:

  • Total points by team and player

  • Total fouls in ante-post markets

  • Total points and fouls in individual matches

TOP TIPS FOR SPREAD BETTING

  • Compare prices available

  • Look to hedge on other markets if your spread is doing well

  • Watch for key player injuries and assess impact
